Overview
The SEED Project (Success in Education and Entrepreneurial Development) is part of The Blue Umbrella, Inc.'s larger initiative to help rebuild Indianapolis' Eastside from within.
The Blue Umbrella, Inc. is proud to partner with Martin University to create a direct pipeline that allows students the opportunity to take a FREE, full credit college-level class. Martin University's history is inspirational. Along with being Indiana's only predominately black institution of higher learning, Martin's focus on helping any students from a variety of backgrounds is the metric that other institutions should follow.
The SEED Project is the first of its kind in this area. This project will take the college experience directly into the community. Classes will be held in community centers and churches found in Indianapolis' Eastside neighborhoods. Enrollment will be open to all adults who have either their high school diploma or are currently working on obtaining their High School Equivalency (HSE).
This class will actively encourage each student to pursue and complete a college degree by focusing on developing entrepreneurial skills, tying together local and global issues, creating a platform to practice written and verbal communication skills, and empowering students to make a difference in their communities. This simple "seed" will help create an investment between each student, their community, and their academic future.
The Objective
If you ask adult learners the reason why they want to obtain a high school diploma or college degree, the answer usually falls within the spectrum of setting an example for their family and/or wanting a better life. Our objective is to simply offer hope in the form of a single class that will grow confidence, determination and a plan of action.
In school, students are taught that there are three basic needs: food, water, and shelter. The Blue Umbrella believes that an innate desire to make a difference and having a voice within a community are aslo basic needs. Most individuals who fall at or below the poverty line rarely have an outlet to make a difference in the lives of others nor possess a voice within their community. We believe that education and entrepreneurship allow for all five basic need to be met.
The Opportunity
This course will provide students with the skills they will need to ensure a successful college career: computer skills, good study habits, test-taking skills, etc. In addition, students will explore the numerous factors that can lead to a community's collapse, as well as ways that each individual can help prevent this from happening in their own communities. Course instructors will help build lasting bonds between students which will help serve as a personal support group throughout their four-year college experience. While a variety of career opportunities will be explored, a high emphasis will be placed on the importance of business ownership and careers in elementary and secondary education.
Some class time will also be devoted to helping students navigate Martin University's admissions process, as well as helping students seek out any financial aid they might need. The class will also host local community and business leaders to share their stories and offer words of support and encouragement.
The Blue Umbrella, Inc. is excited to bring the unique opportunity to Indianapolis. We believe our partnership with Martin University will sow numerous "seeds" within the community that will grow into positive change and help rebuild from within.
Access to this college class is completely free-of-charge to all participants. This includes tuition, text books, and all other classroom materials. Support this project today!
